Professor Niro Siriwardena, director of CaHRU, gave an invited lecture, on ‘Sleep matters: why we should care about insomnia in general practice’ at Cardiff University School of Medicine at the invitation of PRIME Centre Wales (Wales Centre for Primary and Emergency Care Research) on the 26 March 2019.
Niro spoke about work conducted at CaHRU and with collaborators nationally and internationally to try to understand and improve primary care for insomnia using systematic reviews, observational, qualitative and mixed methods designs, quality improvement approaches and clinical trials. He also described a major trial underway of sleep restriction therapy for insomnia in primary care, the HABIT (Health professional Administered Brief Insomnia Therapy) trial, funded by the NIHR HTA programme.
Niro has chaired the External Advisory Board of PRIME which is funded by Health and Care Research Wales since 2016, is a collaborator in the GPs in EDs study funded by the NIHR Health Services and Delivery Research programme and co-supervises the doctoral studies of Dr Alison Cooper at Cardiiff. He was appointed an honorary professor at Cardiff University in 2018.
