Welcoming Dr Udara Gunathilake to CaHRU

We are delighted that Dr Udara Gunathilake has joined the Community and Health Research Unit (CaHRU) for an international fellowship. Representing the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, Dr Gunathilake brings extensive experience and passion for enhancing healthcare quality, patient safety, and evidence synthesis.

Dr. Gunathilake’s medical journey began with his graduation as a Medical Doctor (MBBS) from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, in 2006. His dedication to advancing his knowledge and skills in medical administration is evident through his educational achievements:

  • 2021: Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Medical Administration from PGIM Colombo.
  • 2017: Master’s Degree (MSc) in Medical Administration at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine (PGIM), earning the best academic performance award.
  • 2017: Postgraduate diploma in healthcare quality and patient safety from the University of Colombo, graduating with a merit pass.

These qualifications highlight Dr Gunathilake’s commitment to excellence and his enthuciasm to contribute to the medical administration field.

Professional Experience

Dr Gunathilake also held leadership roles, including:

  • Deputy Provincial Director of Health Services, Central Province
  • Medical Superintendent, Base Hospital Mawanella
  • Director, District General Hospital Nawalapitiya
  • Medical Superintendent, Base Hospital Theldeniya
  • Deputy Regional Director of Health Services, Polonnaruwa District

Academic Contributions

Dr. Gunathilake has made significant contributions to both local and international publications, demonstrating his expertise in medical administration and healthcare research. His work has been published in:

During his fellowship at CaHRU, he aims to explore several key areas of Primary Healthcare System in the UK:

  • Quality and Safety Assurance in UK primary healthcare
  • Information Technology in UK primary Healthcare
  • Prehospital Ambulance Services

He is also eager to advance his skills in conducting systematic reviews with the guidance of Professor Niro Siriwardena and Dr Zahid Asgar at the CaHRU.
